As the market for AI video expands, startups are catering to a growing range of niches by building new services on top of video generation models.

One company making waves in the space is Synthesia, a London-based AI startup that just closed a $180 million Series D funding round at a $2.1 billion valuation.

AI Video Startup Makes a Splash

Synthesia has emerged as a leader in the generative AI video sector, gaining recognition for its innovative AI-driven avatar technology.

The startup’s platform allows users to generate professional-quality video content using customizable AI avatars. Able to speak multiple languages and with a range of customization options, Synthesia brands its avatars as an ideal solution for corporate training, internal communications and marketing campaigns.

According to a press release, the latest $180 million injection of capital will be used to fund product development and expand into new markets.

“This new investment will help us develop a new generation of AI-powered video experiences that are interactive, real-time, and personalized,” remarked Synthesia CEO and co-founder Victor Riparbelli.

Nvidia Backs AI Avatars

While Synthesia’s Series D was led by NEA, with participation from GV, MMC Ventures Atlassian Ventures and others, Nvidia is among its existing investors from previous rounds.

During a keynote address at Computex 2024, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang showcased a lifelike AI replica of himself, demonstrating how Synthesia’s technology can be used for content creation.

Diversification in Generative Video Platforms

Startups like Synthesia are riding a wave of a wave of generative AI platforms carving out specialized niches in video content creation. Beyond Synthesia’s focus on corporate video solutions, other companies are targeting different audiences.

For example, Runway AI has emerged as a favorite among filmmakers and social media influencers due to its high video quality and stylistic range.

Meanwhile, Pictory targets content marketers and the small business market with simple and affordable tools for transforming scripts into video content.

As these platforms grow, the video generation market is poised to become even more dynamic. By catering to specialized needs, Synthesia and its peers are not just developing new AI models, but actively shaping how people use the technology.
