- Some deluded Sussex fans even want Meghan to play herself in the series.
- Showrunner Peter Morgan has put the dampener on such ideas, though, and likely saved himself a lot of trouble in the process.
How many Sussex fans were eagerly awaiting the debut of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the hit Netflix series The Crown?
I know that there was a lot of anticipation from Meghan’s fans. In fact, some of them actually believed there was a chance she’d be hired by Netflix to play herself in the series!
I guess that’s entirely plausible, what with her being a big Hollywood star, right?
Sadly, much like Meghan’s dream of acting alongside Brad Pitt, it doesn’t seem like Netflix is interested.
Why has The Crown snubbed Meghan Markle and Prince Harry?
According to showrunner Peter Morgan, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s story is still unfolding and coupled with his 20-year rule, it just wouldn’t be a good fit for the show:
Meghan and Harry are in the middle of their journey. One wishes some happiness, but I’m much more comfortable writing about things that happened at least 20 years ago. I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule.
A 20-year rule, huh? Okay, that sounds rather convenient. But then, if I were faced with documenting the tall tales of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, I’d probably be making up excuses as well.
Bear in mind the lengths she went to to get Brad Pitt’s attention. Poor Pete would probably have her stalking him for the role as herself in the show, so he’s managed to dodge the proverbial bullet here.

Will the former royals ever be considered for coverage in the show?
When pressed on the chances of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ever being covered in the series, Peter Morgan raised one excellent point:
I don’t want to write about them because to write about them would instantly make it journalistic. To be a dramatist, I think you need perspective, and you need to also allow for the opportunity for metaphor. Once something has a metaphorical possibility, it can then become interesting.
All joking aside, this is a good point that Peter makes. It’s easier to include royal figures and storylines from decades ago because we’ve already seen how they play out in their entirety.
Who knows how this shambles of a story with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will end up? For now, there’s a lot of talk about what the couple could do in California, but very little by way of action.
Prince Andrew joins Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on the sidelines
While the series will cover some of the more controversial royal storylines, such as Prince Charles separating from Princess Diana, and Prince Andrew’s split from Sarah, Duchess of York, it won’t be venturing into the murky waters of Andrew’s recent life.
When you take that situation into account as well, it makes all the more sense to cap things to a 20-year time limit.
Imagine being Peter Morgan and trying to negotiate the tricky waters of Prince Andrew’s recent scandal, along with the acrimonious split from the royal family of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry? How would one even begin to put such goings-on into a watchable format?
Not to mention he’d be trying to carry out this arduous task all the while being stalked by Meghan Markle, who’d be looking to play herself in the series.
Stick with your 20-year excuse, Peter. Leave the current royal goings-on to another hapless director in 20 years time.
