Xbox has recently revealed the list of games coming to Games with Gold this January . It’s a pretty impressive list, including Batman: The Telltale Series and Tekken 6. But, there is one game on that list which most people haven’t played. In fact, many people haven’t even heard of it.
Styx: Shards of Darkness is a co-op focused stealth game from Cyanide Studio . It’s the sequel to Styx: Master of Shadows, another stealth game starring a foul-mouthed goblin. Both of these games are excellent, but unlike the first game, not many people have had the chance to try out Shards of Darkness .
Xbox Gold’s Best Selection Yet
Games with Gold has really outdone themselves this time. Starting out the year this strong bodes well for the rest of 2020. Styx: Shards of Darkness is such a strong inclusion, not just because of its great gameplay and art style, but also because of its amazing protagonist.
Styx is a small goblin with a wicked personality. He basically runs around a world filled with humans and elves, taking the mickey out them all. He has a foul mouth, is genuinely disgusting, and enjoys making jokes about other games. Literally, within the first few minutes of Shards of Darkness, he has already called out Assassin’s Creed.
It’s not just his personality, but how well suited Styx is to stealth. He has powers, such as phlegm clones (seriously), invisibility and poison spit. All of which come in super helpful when sneaking around the dark corners of the world stabbing people up. He’s also super agile, able to climb, jump and slide with ease. He’s just super fun and easy to control, and the levels have plenty of verticalities to put those moves to full use.
Exploration, Stabbing, and Phlegm (Oh My!)
That fact that Shards of Darkness has been included with January’s Games with Gold is a godsend. It’s set in a genuinely interesting fantasy world, and honestly, it’s just a fun world to run around. There are plenty of corners and secrets to promote exploration, and because you can approach each level in multiple ways there’s a ton of replay value.
If you even kind of enjoy fantasy or stealth games, you should consider grabbing January’s Games with Gold. It’s nice to think that this game might get a bit more exposure thanks to Microsoft including it in the free games collection. As if that wasn’t good enough you’ll also get 3 other great games too. Absolute bargain.
