If Godfall Is This Bland Could the PS5 Be in Serious Trouble?

The leaked Godfall trailer makes the PlayStation 5 launch title look astonishingly bland. Could the PS5 be in serious trouble?
  • Godfall is one of the PlayStation 5’s premier launch titles.
  • Despite the hype, a leaked trailer makes the game look generic and stunningly bland.
  • What does this tell us about the PS5’s launch title lineup?

Next-generation consoles get everyone excited. More than just massive hardware upgrades, the upcoming launches of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X mean that the gaming industry is about to change in a big way.

At least, that’s what a new console debut supposed to mean.

But if what we know about PS5 launch title Godfall is anything to go by, we’re in for another decade of the same.

As flashy and polished as the key art is, this leaked Godfall trailer does not inspire confidence. | Source: Gearbox

Is Godfall Going to Disappoint?

An internal Godfall trailer leaked online this week, and unfortunately for Sony, the game looks stunningly boring. If the rest of the PS5 launch titles are this bland, then we’re going to have a very dull next-gen launch indeed.

It’s not that the combat in Godfall doesn’t look action-packed. It’s just that it’s nothing we haven’t already seen a million times before.

It’s a third-person action hack-and-slash. Just typing that almost made me fall asleep.

The visual design is mildly interesting, but it’s not enough to carry the game. Maybe Godfall has a genuinely-amazing story that’ll make the hack-and-slash snoozefest worthwhile.

But right now, it just looks like a  shiny mess of button mashing.

It’s Not All Doom-and-Gloom for the PS5 (Yet)

That said, judging Godfall on this trailer alone is a bit unfair.

It’s ugly, but remember that we weren’t ever supposed to see it. It was produced more than a year ago, so the game could look very different at launch.

There’s even speculation that Godfall wasn’t even originally meant to be a PS5 title. That would explain why the leaked trailer doesn’t look all that impressive.

True or not, let’s hope that Godfall – as well as the rest of the PS5 launch lineup – doesn’t look this awful when the console debuts later this year.
