  • Insiders and rumors point towards an early to mid-June window for a PlayStation 5 event.

Sony has offered the clearest indication yet that a PlayStation 5 event is on the horizon, or short of a proper reveal, Sony is preparing to shed light on titles headed to the next-gen console.

Up until now, insider nods and rumors have fueled speculation that a PlayStation 5 reveal event was on the cards for early to mid-June, but Sony has remained tight-lipped about its plans.

A ‘Compelling’ Line-up of PlayStation 5 Games

Speaking during Sony Corporate Strategy Meeting webcast earlier today , Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida revealed plans to introduce a line-up of PlayStation 5 titles shortly.

Yoshida explains :

Games for the PS5 that deliver this new game experience are being made by both first and third-party developers and we plan to introduce a compelling line-up of titles soon.

‘Soon’ may not be too much to latch onto. Given PlayStation 5’s promotional drip-fed to date allied to Sony springing announcements on fans with little to no notice, this is as good as confirmation of a forthcoming event. Whether Sony will unveil the final design of the PlayStation 5 remains up in the air.

Early to Mid-June

As for the time frame, we could be looking at weeks. Known insider and Bloomberg reporter, Jason Schreier, recently pointed to early to mid-June, while Venture Beat’s Jeff Grubbs offered a more definitive date of June 4.

Grubb explained in an article published yesterday that Sony has now retooled its plans and shifted away from the June 4 date  due to the volatility thrown up by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Grubbs explains:

The company was originally planning this for June 4, but is moving it around. The exact date is more nebulous now. That doesn’t mean it’s slipping by a matter of weeks, though. The early June timeframe is still the company’s current plan.

The timing also looks ideal. A showcase in the next couple of weeks would allow Sony to capitalize on the momentum garnered by last week’s dazzling Unreal Engine 5 PS5 tech demo, especially after Microsoft dropped the ball with its very public Inside Xbox next-gen gameplay misfire.
