Hours before Stranger Things season three was released on Netflix, fans began noticing portals inspired by the show were popping up in Fortnite.
This led to speculation that there would be a crossover event featuring the two entertainment juggernauts, with Epic Games and Netflix subsequently confirming the news. Taking to the game’s official Twitter, Epic posted an image that confirmed the speculation, although didn’t add any details. This has kept fans of both captivated for the upcoming Fortnite/Stranger Things crossover event.
This leads to many people questioning what will be included in the crossover, outside of the portals. The most notable of these is the Mega Mall, which plays a part in both Stranger Things and Fortnite. The mall serves as a location in both the Netflix show and the game, which was the first hint that there might be a crossover; this is also where many of the portals first began appearing. These portals haven’t had the effect that people thought they would, though; instead of transporting players to The Upside Down, they’re brought to another area in the map.
There is very little information to go on outside of this, prompting many people to speculate on the matter. Based on how Fortnite has implemented partnerships in the past, players may be able to expect a few things. In many of these, players were offered skins based on characters, such as John Wick from his titular franchise, The Avengers, and a few other goodies. There might be a few themed in-game events based on the Netflix show; based on the timing, these will more than likely be taken from Stranger Things season three.
One of the more obvious Stranger Things aspects that could be implemented in Fortnite is The Upside Down world; this is likely, as it’s hinted at with the portals. Character skins, weapons and powers are areas that many players might expect. What is and isn’t included in the event mightn’t be confirmed until the event itself, however.
Though the portals have already begun showing up, with six so far, many players may wonder when the Fortnite/Stranger Things crossover will happen in earnest. Nothing has been confirmed yet, which means that everything is up to speculation. Based on how quickly each of the partnerships have been in the past, players should expect the event to happen relatively soon, especially considering Stranger Things’ season three already streaming on Netflix.
In the past few months, Fortnite has partnered with several other notable brands. With the John Wick partnership, the character became playable; The Avengers characters became a large part of the game around the release of Avengers: Endgame.
