In a note on Reddit that he is seeking senior engineers, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong also mentioned the possibility that the wallet may support more altcoins, and that Ethereum is scaling better than bitcoin.
Armstrong’s original intent may have been to make Reddit readers aware that the company is seeking senior engineers as it ramps up for what he sees as a great future for cryptocurrency. But his post generated a number of comments about a coding test the company posted, along with comments about the possibility of Coinbase supporting more altcoins in addition to Ethereum.
“We are looking to support any cryptocurrency that our customers want to use, and my hope is that one of them succeeds massively, reaching billions of people over the coming years,” Armstrong wrote. He added:
I’m very interested in have digital currency scale, and I agree that Ethereum seems to be doing a much better job at this than bitcoin right now. But the future is still unknown.
He also asked Reddit readers to get the word out that Coinbase is seeking new talent.
Coinbase added Ethereum a day after its historical hard fork in July.
Coinbase, it was noted, could benefit from Ethereum’s plans for unlimited scalability, added security by employing fail-safe mechanisms in smart contracts, and higher flexibility, leading to a greater ability to innovate and adapt.
Armstrong was among those who applauded Ethereum for its hard fork in July.
Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of Coinbase, had noted that in May that in its first nine months, Ethereum’s level of app development had already outpaced bitcoin’s. Ehrsam did not advocate a contest between the two cryptocurrencies. He said there is a significant overlap between them, making the comparison useful.
In response to Armstrong’s comment about the possibility of Coinbase supporting more altcoins, Reddit posters asked him to consider Monero, XMR, BTS, Zcash, Zcoin, Litecoin, Shadowcash and Dogecoin. The most support was expressed for Monero and XMR.
The coding quiz also drew a lot of comments. Reddit posters had different views on how hard the test was. Some questioned the value of such tests as a prerequisite for hiring.
Coinbase has posted positions for engineers on its website careers page.
