The name of the 2020 Call of Duty game leaks and gets completely roasted on Twitter by upset fans of the series.
There was a surprise leak today when Okami, a prominent Call of Duty leaker, revealed that the next game in the series will be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The leaker posted the information by creating a mockup of boxart for the game.
After fans began to spread the information, some were excited about the possibility of getting to wade into the geopolitical tension between the United States and Russia. This has been a big theme in the Call of Duty series since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s controversial “No Russian” level but this year’s game could look at the conflict between the two countries more.
However, many other Call of Duty fans quickly began to roast publisher Activision for its poor game naming skills. One criticism that came up several times is that Activision only put “Black Ops” into the title because it knows how popular the Black Ops series is. The game would have sounded better as Call of Duty: Cold War, but as the best-selling title in the series is Call of Duty: Black Ops, it’s not surprising that Activision would do this.
Fans also created several joke titles to give Activision some ideas if the company wants to change the name before release.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War: Black Operations: Modern Infinite Warfare: Activision Warfare: Blundell Ops: Lee Ross Warfare: Vietnam Vonderhaar Pegi 12” was a suggestion from Twitter user Cress.
The name is also frustrating for content creators such as YouTubers who have to try and get people to click. A long name such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War isn’t easy to search for and takes up a huge amount of space in a video’s title. On Twitter, some creators have said that they will just call the game Black Ops Cold War or Call of Duty: Cold War.
