By CCN.com: Face it: No one plays Call of Duty for the single-player campaign. So gamers should take heart that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer preview teases Infinity Ward’s most ambitious multiplayer experience to date.
Traditionally, the Call of Duty games have allowed for competitive multiplayer matches generally sporting about 6 to 12 players per mode. However, the next title in the tentpole franchise aims to throw tradition out the door.
In the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , “Ground War” mode will support player counts up to and exceeding 100.
Here’s Infinity Ward in a press release:
“Players can jump into new play spaces that redefine Call of Duty multiplayer, from quick-action, close-quarters 2 vs. 2 experiences in Gunfight, traditional 6 vs. 6 multiplayer gameplay, modes that support 10 vs. 10 and 20 vs. 20 firefights, along with high-player count maps and combat, such as the all-new Ground War, an epic large-scale mode supporting more than 100-players. And, that’s just the beginning for Modern Warfare fans.”
The press release suggests that, while the game will support the traditional setup of 6 vs. 6, players will have a tantalizing variety of game modes to choose from, offering players the chance to swap from a massive 100-person firefight in Ground War to a much more intimate style of combat in 2 vs. 2 matches.
The variety in match scales demonstrates that Infinity Ward continually wants to take bold steps in new directions while providing fans with a solid reboot of a familiar concept.
That said, in contrast to its first-person shooter competitors such as the Battlefield series, Modern Warfare’s 100-player mode begs the question of necessity.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had a 100-player mode. However, it was in service to the growingly-popular battle royale mode rather than a true CoD firefight.
Will Infinity Ward be able to pull this one off?
While some fans feel a bit pessimistic, suggesting that latency issues will begin to arise, others say they’re excited.
One Reddit user said, “I am seriously excited for this, I always played Ground War for almost all the CoDs, however the problem is if the game will have maps to support it.”
On the other hand, one less-excited user said, “CoD 4 was so good because it had small teams and well-designed maps,” suggesting that 100-player matches would be too chaotic.
In either regard, perhaps Infinity Ward will offer gamers a glimpse at Ground War before Modern Warfare’s October 25, 2019 release date.
